I realised in the mid 80's when I became really serious about wildlife photography that to obtain the best quality it is necessary to use the best equipment. Of course you also need to learn all the other aspects of being a good photographer as well as having a good knowledge about the subjects. I have always kept up with new technical developments and this means that I now use exclusively the highest quality digital cameras.

My work horse camera is a Canon EOS 1Ds mark2 16.7 million pixel body and I also use a  Canon EOS 1D mark2 8 million pixel body which is capable of 8 frames per second. For bird photography a long telephoto lens is necessary and I use a Canon 500mm F5.6 IS (image stabilised) lens mostly coupled with a 1.4X tele-converter giving an effective focal length of 700mm. I use a 400mm F4 DOIS lens for flight photography when I can get close enough to the subject and use of a 1.4X tele-converter is often necessary. For scenery and closer work I have a Canon 24-105 F4 IS lens.

I always shoot in RAW format and convert to 300dpi TIFF files for final processing in Adobe Photoshop image editor.
